You Should Be Here

Music is life. What I mean by that is I am THAT annoying person who can’t go anywhere without having my headphones in. I literally can’t do anything without music, like grocery shop, walk to class, do my homework, exercise or basically function without it. Even my parents get irritated with me when they’re driving and they’ll be talking to me, but I have my earphones in. For that reason, I love to listen to MY music, not the annoying songs being played on the radio. Just like how us girls who die over the trends happening during NYFW, I get a little crazy when discovering the latest underground artists.

My favorite topic about music is not only the message behind the song, but the story behind the artists. Growing up, I always admired those who were doing something different through music (aka my fave artist FLUME), but I always have grown to become obsessed with female artists who are taking over. One of the reasons why we decided to make the blog was because of girl artists like Kali Uchis, Abra, and Kehlani who have thirsty hearts and musical souls! They have grown to love being different and passionately express it through their music. These girls all have one thing in common and you can tell by the way they express it through their music: they are driven.

Kali Uchis is the singer behind one of her more popular songs, “Know What I Want.” Her songs are the type of songs you would drive with the top down cruising through Sunset Blvd. She’s been featured on songs with Vince Staples, Major Lazer and is on an up and coming collab with A$AP Rocky. She has caught the eyes of Snoop Dog and Tyler, The Creator and has been featured in some of their music as well. To be featured on songs with some of my favorite rap artists makes me want to be her BFF. Kali Uchis not only has written and produced her own badass music, but she has directed her past videos and made her own cover art too. She doesn’t side with anyone else being in charge of what she believes she is capable of doing herself. She was born to make music and is swooning me away with her girly tunes and trendy style, which is one reason why she is becoming a rising solo artist.

My favorite song: Ridin’ Round

Zoë has been my number one go-to for fashion tips, but she definitely has also been the one person to introduce me to new artists. I thank her for introducing me to the amaaaazing Abra! If you haven't heard of her, you NEED to listen to the princess of Awful Records. She literally records her own music in her closet with a simple setup of a laptop and a microphone. Abra’s unique voice meshes perfectly with Father’s dope flow. Her music is just as good as the time Madonna made out with Drake during Coachella: juicy.

My favorite Song: Why Don’t U (ft. iLoveMakonnen & Father)

I saved the best for last. Kehlani has stolen my heart since the first time I saw her perform. I can shamelessly say that I have seen her perform live 5 times and each time has been better than the last. I get goosebumps every time! Her unbelievable voice and sexy dance moves makes her way to my top artists to see live. She is a huge role model for all girls because she works hard and is VERY passionate about what she sings. When she would post on Snapchat, she would always ask her followers where she could get to the studio if she was inspired wherever she was and at any time. Her You Should Be Here mixtape makes me dream and dance away with her ethereal voice. I am totally looking forward to seeing what she is going to bring in the near future.

My favorite song: Til the Morning

Knowing that these girls are all around my age group motivates me to work hard and stay driven to accomplish what I want to do and who I want to become. With that said, Zoe and I have gathered some of our favorite songs to jam out to throughout the week from these three powerhouses.

If you have any recommendations on some artists we definitely should be listening to, SPILL. I’m dying to know!

Off to listen to some beats,
