Kiss It Better

As two girls with the oiliest faces we both really struggle with a proper routine, from start to finish, that minimizes the number of times we have to whip out our oil papers. It seems like whatever we try and whatever we do to make it stop we just can’t seem to find the cure. We’ve even spent hours on YouTube watching product review, after product review but it just feels like every beauty blogger eevveeerrr has dry or combination skin–never oily.

We’re nowhere near the solution but we’ve discovered a few tips that have seemed to make a difference. The search has been hard and sometimes it feels like giving up is the better option but if it weren’t for our friend, Reyna, who has been our oily skin care consultant then we would be lookin’ like we just stepped out of the sauna. NO THANKS GIRL, BYE!

Now, this isn’t your average skin cleansing routine… We’re going to take you from washing your face all the way to setting your makeup with the right type of setting spray. We gotchu!

Now let’s get this party started…

AM Cleansing Routine

Step 1: Rinse your face well with cold water— it is, in fact, a myth that running warm water on your face opens your pores. Your pores don’t have muscles so therefore they can’t open and close. BUT hot/warm water does dry out your skin and that’s the absolute last thing you want to do if you have oily skin. You’re skin will freak out and then want to overproduce oil. Not a pretty sight :(

Step 2: Apply toner— We both use a toner that treats dark spots and discoloration from all of our acne scars (uuuggghh). Toner is key if you are acne prone because it removes any dirt you may have missed when you cleansed your skin.

We recommend: Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solutions or Murad Clarifying Toner

You’ll see in a little bit why you shouldn't wash your face both at night and in the morning with a cleanser. Hold your horses.

Step 3: Apply serum— There’s all types of serums out there for any skin problems you may have but we’ve never come across one that treats oily skin specifically. If you’ve tried something that does control oils let us know! We’re willing to try anything.

We recommend: Kiehl's Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum

Step 4: Apply moisturizer & sunscreen- Finding a GOOD moisturizer and sunscreen combo that has oil control properties is nearly impossible, but both are essential to a healthy, glowing complexion. If you don’t protect all of the skin on your body from UVA/UVB rays that are emitted from the sun then you can’t complain when you’re 60 years old and you have the wrinkles and aging spots of an 80 year old. The harmful rays from the sun have proven to age and damage skin cells without the protection of sunscreen. The fairer skin tone you are the more likely you are to be affected. THESE ARE FACTS! Use them to your advantage while you still can so you can look fly as hell when you’re 60 makin’ everybody think you get botox and what not.

We recommend: Rodan + Fields Unblemish Step 4 Oil Control LotionMario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer Cetaphil Oil Control Moisturizer (these are all good for optimal sun protection and the perfect amount of moisture), Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (awesome for controlling oil)

Makeup Routine

Step 1: Primer— Applying your makeup primer is probably one of the most important steps for oily skin types because anyone who has excessive oil probably knows that your face eats up all the makeup on your skin if you don’t use the right primer… or any primer at all. It’s such a waste taking the time to make sure your highlighter and bronzer are the perfect amount of fleeky only for it to be gone by midday. So don’t skip out on primer!

We recommend: LORAC POREfection Mattifying Face Primer or Estée Lauder Matte Perfecting Primer

Step 2: Color correcting (optional)— This new step in your makeup routine is all the rage right now in the beauty world. The green concealer is a must for any redness and the peach concealer is perf for those dark spots we were talking about earlier!

We recommend: NYX Color Correcting Palette

Step 3: Foundation & concealer– Lately there has been special, specific foundations and concealers made for girls with oily skin but if you use these next few tips we’re about to throw at you, you’ll be able to use whichever product. The super, duper, ultra secret is to apply all your face makeup with a beauty blender! The beauty blender has changed the sponge and brush game when it comes to makeup. It truly does work magic; you have to see it for yourself. Beauty blenders apply your makeup so flawlessly, and the technology of the sponge soaks up all the excess oil that your face doesn’t need which is the key ingredient to you flawless look. Just use a quick dabbing motion to pack it all in when apply your product and you’re golden!

We recommend: the Beauty Blender

Step 4: Setting powder— Whether you have oily skin, dry skin, or combination skin you NEED to set your foundation and concealer with powder immediately after application. If you don’t already do this: hi, hello, welcome to 2016. Setting your foundation and concealer with powder will prevent the product from settling its way into your wrinkles and crevices. Setting powder helps make the rest of your makeup apply seamlessly as well. It's also important to note that applying your face makeup with your beauty blender is #1 key to reducing your oils through out the day. It's all about application!

We recommend: Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder or Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Powder Makeup

Step 5: Apply rest of makeup— You do you girl! If you like minimal looks go ahead and rock your everyday glam look. If you wanna rock a heavy smokey eye on the daily, WORK IT!! Just remember to always do whatever makes you happy. You're beautiful either way.

Step 6: Setting Spray— This is also an important step that you’ll need in order to stay nice and fresh. Remember when your mom use to spray your face with hairspray to set your stage makeup for your dance recitals? No?.. Just our mom’s? Well anyways this is an old trick but we threw out the Aqua Net and got something that wouldn’t clog our pores until the next century. Setting sprays will make your look last all day long! No touch-ups required.

We recommend: Kat Von D Lock 'N Load Setting Mist

PM Cleansing Routine

Step 1: Remove your makeup— Time to take off all the gunk you applied at the beginning of your day as well as any dirt and other nastiness you may have gotten on your face. Taking off your makeup and cleansing your face before you go to bed is so crucial to having a perfect complexion. We know that at the end of the day you just want to knock out but truuuussst, you'll definitely regret that decision when you wake up in the morning and take a look in the mirror. It's definitely a commitment. Rumors have it that Halle Berry hasn't skipped a night of her cleansing routine since she was 20-years-old and she’s going to be 50 this year! So if you're still looking for the fountain of youth it's your bathroom sink.

We recommend: Bioderma Creatine H20 Micelle Solution and Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths

Step 2: Cleanser— When it comes to cleansers make sure you’re not using anything with sulfates in them. Sulfates are notoriously known for stripping all the oils on your skin (that goes for your hair and scalp too) therefore your skin has to overproduce oils which only leads to more oiliness.

We recommend: Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser or Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Face Wash

Repeat Step 2 & 3 from our AM routine

Step 2 1/2: Spot treatments— Depending on what type of acne* you have there are some formulations out there that have spots treatments for when you have breakouts. Use the spot treatment best suited to your needs before you go to bed every night and your trouble areas will soon go away instead of getting out of hand.

We recommend: Rodan + Fields Soothe Step 3 Moisture Replenishing Cream or Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion

Step 4: Nighttime Moisturizers— Right before you hit the sack lather on a moisturizer that’ll keep you nice and hydrated until the morning! Make sure you rub it in well or else the oils from the moisturizer will just sit on top of your skin instead of being absorbed.

We recommend: Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate or Clear Proof® Oil Free Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin

Now, we're not saying that our tips and tricks completely take away all the oil but they do certainly help maintain the greasiness. We're so happy that the "dewy" look is in right now because now we don't have to do anything extra to achieve it lol! By the end of the day we have the perfect amount of "dewiness" to look "trendy."

The point we're trying to make is that a healthy complexion is more beautiful than any makeup trend or fashion statement. Your health should always be your first priority.

Also, if you have oily skin and it tends to ruin your confidence just keep in mind that the oils will preserve your skin better than dry or combination skin. AKA minimal wrinkles, you're welcome ;) BUT WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN ANYWAYS!!

Until next time!

*Sidenote: We both suffer from cystic acne and the cause of this type of acne is an imbalance of hormones. If you haven't read our post yet about Moody Bitches, check it out, maybe you'll learn a thing or two about your hormones and how to control them!
