A girl’s love affair with her hair is an indescribable relationship. One day she could absolutely, and totally be in love with her luscious mane, but the next she could want to pull a 2007 Britney and shave it all off. You will never understand it unless you’ll know what it’s like to spend months or even years growing out your hair because you wanna look like a mermaid only to make an impulsive decision to chop it all off— of course, you immediately regret that decision after you figure out that short hair is definitely much harder to maintain and groom than long, mermaid hair. It makes no sense, we know. But there’s nobody who understands this better than the lovely squad of girls from Tousled and their fearless leader, Jessica.

Whether you’re having a bad day and you need a pick-me-up-blowout or you want a special up-do for an upcoming event, there’s nothing the Tousled team can’t do! You’ll walk out of there feelin’ [insert 100 emoji here]. Hair-apathy is a thing! We know from experience.

Over thirst-quenching glasses of wine (excluding Cali because she's still a little baby) and a savory dinner, Jessica told us all the in’s and out’s of what it’s like being behind the scenes doing all the glam for special events and how her job as a parent is pretty much complete because her daughter, Camille, requests to listen to Beyonce in the car. She knows Lemonade by heart! #kidgoals. Jessica’s good vibes and free-spirit are so infectious we lost track of time having good laughs and girl talk. Jess and her team are easily one of the best and most hard working hairstylists in the Sun City you’d be crazy not to check them out some TI:ME [at Montecillo]!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself! Describe yourself for the SEG readers.

A: If I could sum myself up, I would tell you guys that I’m very free-spirited and I just love life. I think that everyday is a new day to create something beautiful and I don’t think I take myself too seriously. I think that I remain humble through every single experience whether it’s falling on your knees, dusting them off and getting back up again or creating something beautiful. I just never take anything for granted.

I was older, like around 23 and majoring in Communications with a minor in Journalism. I loved it and I wasn’t bad at school, but it wasn’t fulfilling me.

Q: What was the pivotal moment in your life that made you decide to go into the beauty industry?

A: I always tell people this story, but I would see New York Fashion Week happening and I so badly wanted to just be apart of it. I was like okay, how do I get there? I’m definitely not 6’11 and 100 pounds so I’m not a model. I’m creative in a sense that I am not a designer, like I cannot design something beautiful. I just know that when I see something beautiful, I like it and I buy it. I cannot create a handbag or shoes or clothes. It’s too much pressure. So, I’m not a designer. But what other element could make me apart of this fashion scene? I was like, behind the scenes-- hair and makeup. Absolutely. [Zoë: how old were you when you decided?] I was older, like around 23 and majoring in Communications with a minor in Journalism. I loved it and I wasn’t bad at school, but it wasn’t fulfilling me. There was something missing. Once I took the leap of faith and just go for it, it was the best decision I ever made. It was awesome!

Q: Now tell us a little bit about Tousled! How did it all start? Where did the name come from?

A: So, Tousled is my second baby. Cami is my first and Tousled is my second. Tousled came because unfortunately, hairdressers don’t have the best credibility. They don’t have the best reputation. Hairdressers tend to be flaky and not come through when they need to the most, so when I do hair and makeup on Saturday’s, I’m usually getting the bride ready with her bridal party, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t people attending the wedding that still want hair and makeup. People still needed my services even though I was busy doing the bride’s hair. So I would recommend people and they wouldn’t show up. I felt terrible because it wasn’t my fault, but it was a reflection of me. So, Tousled came about because I thought to myself why can’t I pass on the love that I have for up-do’s, makeup and hair to people that were going to take it serious and still put out a good product. It wasn’t for the love of starting a business, it was for the love of fulfilling a need to clients that I care about because I’ve had them for so long. The name came out from a time that it was me, my assistant manager at the time Krystal and Victoria Gutierrez, who asked, “What are you going to call it?” I hadn’t even thought about that. So we started googling synonyms for good hair, like messy hair and Tousled came up and I was like, “That’s it. That’s the name!”

Q: What makes Tousled different than any other blow dry bar?

A: I feel like when you love something so passionately, like you can pass that onto your employees that makes a world of a difference. There can be a billion franchises, but there is only one Tousled. It’s as if I were to open a sushi restaurant.. I know nothing about sushi, so how can I pass that love onto food when I’m not Asian. Like this is my life, I love good hair! I think that that is what separates us. Every single person that works there also loves hair. My employees are such unique individuals, but we all share the same passion and that’s hair.

Q: What are the biggest and your most favorite hair trends for the summer?

A: Of course, anything that’s messy. Anything that’s fly-away. Anything that’s tousled, like textured. Nothing that’s overdone. Anything that has a knot in it, whether it be a low bun, a top knot or a middle knot. Parted down the middle with a low bun is so chic! It’s amazing how effortless how hair has become, but how much harder it is to do effortless hair.

...those are milestones that you get to be apart of with someone and you have no idea how special that is.

Q: What has been your most memorable moment doing someone’s glam?

A: Oh wow! I think that there is just so many to single out, but it’s really such a treat to be apart of someone’s wedding day or someone’s hair transformation. Hair transformations are some milestones in people’s lives. You chop your hair off because you’re going through something in your life, you color your hair blonde because you’re going through something in your life, like those are milestones that you get to be apart of with someone and you have no idea how special that is. It’s like they’re trusting you with the biggest change in their life, you know? I just feel like those are milestones in people’s life and they choose you to share with them. I don’t think I can point out just one because this is my life everyday. I honestly think that the big ones are when people fly me out to their destination wedding to help them get ready. I’ve done them all over the world and I feel so blessed because not only do I get to be apart of the getting ready process, but then I’m a guest, and their friend. That’s when you realize that this is not just a client. This is someone that loves you on a deeper level. You build relationships. I have people that have been with me from the beginning and I have people who have recommended me, it’s just amazing!

Q: Out of all the celebrities, who would be your dream celeb to work with and why?

A: Oh my god, Nicole Richie! She is amazing. She is not only gorgeous, I feel like we would really be friends. She’s like my spirit animal. For sure! I’m obsessed with anything and everything about her. I love House of Harlow and I love how she trended purple hair three years ago when nobody else was doing it. Ugh, I love everything about her!

Q: What are your top five favorite products you think every girl should have in her cabinet?

A:

1) I think every girl should have a texture spray. There’s no way you can create messy, beachy anything without a texture mist. You can curl your hair as messy as you want and if you don’t spray a texture mist after it, it pieces together and your curls just look likes curls. Of course, Living Proof is eeeeverything. If you don’t have one Living Proof product, you are missing out on life!

2) I’m currently obsessed with Chanel foundation, I think the Vitalumière foundation is probably one of the best things I have ever experienced on makeup as far as leaving skin looking perfect.

3) BB Cream is also another thing I cannot live without. There’s not a day that goes by when I’m not rushing out of the house with two kids, trying to get out of the house and get somewhere and the only thing I can throw on are my eyebrows and my BB Cream and I am happy with that.

4) Bronzer is also essential. Whether you’re light, medium fair, bronzer is just what every girl needs. It can make you look so glowy, so dewy!

5) The Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil from Eminence! Oh my god, I figured out how to get that J Lo glow. You put two drops on your fingertips, work it in all over your skin and I swear I’ve never gotten so many compliments on my skin ever since I started using that stuff. This is my top product!

Q: We know it’s recommend to wash your hair less, but what are all the crazy things you do to extend your washes?

A: First you wash with Living Proof, everything and anything within that line has two molecules that are patented by two scientists that work for MIT. They have over 100 patents and Living Proof is two of them. They work on cancer research also, but they do these patents. PBAE and OFPMA; so these two molecules that are in every single Living Proof product not only help to keep your hair cleaner longer, they also help to repel dirt and oil, so you’re having to wash less. First step is to wash with the shampoo and the conditioner, second is everybody needs the Living Proof Dry Shampoo. Everybody needs it! Not only does it clean your hair, it also absorbs sweat and oil. The way they tested it out in their lab is they got sweat from someone working out and they put it in a test tube and they sprayed the Living Proof Dry Shampoo and it absorbed the sweat. It also absorbs sweat so for people who work out everyday can still use this.

Q: Is there one step you think no one should ever skip in their beauty routine no matter what?

A: Yes, moisturizer! Skin is everything. There are so many options out there and the only way you will know which one is the best is if it is recommended to you. And you should also moisturize your hair too. Everyone needs a good hair mask and the Restore hair mask from Living Proof is amazing!

Q: What do you see next for yourself? Any new goals that you have your mind set on?

A: Well, because I love you guys I will share my next business plan with you. You’ll be the first to know! My goal is to combine my hair studio with Tousled and have them side to side. It would definitely be to combine them in a new location that is not commercial. I don’t know if I will buy an old house and convert it or buy two and knock one down and make it into a parking lot. But that is my first goal because I don’t think anybody will love it as much as I do no matter what and I want to be there. I want to see people going there. I want to be there to welcome them! I get so much good feedback from Tousled, but I would want to be there to see it and unfortunately, I am not able to be there because I am always so dedicated to my work that there is no time to be at Tousled. I wish I can be at two places at once. Plan Number 2: Tousled 2 will come from that. I would love to open further west, passed Resler, maybe? I think Tousled should go statewide first and then we’ll go from there.
